Mayor signs historic housing legislation into law

This week Mayor Ed Murray signed the residential provision of the Mandatory Housing Affordability program which creates 6,000 affordable units in Seattle over the next 10 years. For the first time in Seattle's history, developers of new multifamily housing projects will be required to build or contribute to building affordable housing.

Murray also signed a tenant protection bill banning discrimination based on source of income and preferred employer rent discounts. This legislation expands fair housing protections for renters using subsidies or other sources of income.

Both laws were recommendations of the Housing Affordability Living Agenda and were passed by City Council in the past week. The signing ceremony took place at Low Income Housing Institute's Ernestine Anderson's Place, which is adjacent to a new affordable housing development site.

Congratulations to 2016 Tech Matching Fund awardees!

Mayor Murray and the City Council awarded 10 Seattle organizations a total of $320,000 in Technology Matching Funds from the City of Seattle. Council committee voted unanimously to approve the awards. Full Council approval is expected on Sept. 6.

The Technology Matching Fund provides funds for digital equity projects up to $50,000. City dollars are matched by the community's contribution of volunteer labor, materials, professional services, or cash. The goals of the fund are to increase access to free or low-cost broadband; empower residents with digital literacy skills; and ensure affordable, available and sufficient devices and technical support. This program is part of the City's Digital Equity Initiative

Mayor collaborates with President Obama's Cabinet members

U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro met with Mayor Murray this week to discuss the national youth homelessness crisis. Murray declared a State of Emergency in November 2015 to draw state and federal attention to the homelessness epidemic in our region.

On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell joined Mayor Murray and President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Seattle Bob Gilbertson to announce the selection of Seattle to participate in the nationwide Let's Move! Outside initiative to inspire millions of young people to play, learn, serve and work outdoors. Seattle is the final of 51 cities announced nationwide over the past two years.

City street renamed after local jazz legend Ernestine Anderson

Mayor Ed Murray, joined by family and community members, honored the memory of Ernestine Anderson this week by renaming a three block portion of S. Jackson Street in honor of the late musician.

Anderson was a four-time Grammy nominated jazz and blues singer who attended Garfield High School and performed regularly at jazz clubs on Jackson Street. She passed away in March.

Next Thursday: Third annual Seattle Kitty Hall

On Thursday, Aug. 25, Mayor Murray will once again rename Seattle City Hall as "Kitty Hall" for the day, to promote awareness of the Seattle Animal Shelter and encourage shelter cat adoptions and pet licensing.

Our Kitty Hall event will see the return of the much loved kitten tent, where folks can cuddle and play with a handful of kittens. This year we'll also be bringing adult cats – and the cats and some of the kittens will be available for on-site adoptions. This will be a great opportunity for you to soak in the cuteness and add a furry friend to your family.

Join us in the Bertha Knight Landes Room at City Hall, 600 Fourth Avenue, Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. More information available here
